Os restaurantes populares de Belo Horizonte foram premiados, no início do mês de setembro, durante o encontro anual de cidades signatárias do Pacto de Milão, em Tel Aviv (Israel), pela oferta de refeições gratuitas a pessoas em situação de rua. BH foi a vencedora na categoria Equidade Social e Econômica. A disputa envolveu 109 cidades do mundo todo, que inscreveram ao todo 157 experiências na competição.

Os restaurantes populares constituem uma importante ação estratégica da política municipal de Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional, visando melhorar a qualidade de vida da população e o combate à fome. A população em geral paga R$ 3,00 pelo almoço, R$ 1,50 pelo jantar e R$ 0,75 pelo café da manhã. Os beneficiários do Programa Bolsa Família têm desconto de 50% sobre estes valores e as pessoas em situação de rua que são cadastradas pela prefeitura não pagam.

BH conta com quatro restaurantes e um refeitório popular, onde são servidas, em média, 9.700 refeições/dia, num total de 2.4 milhões de refeições/ano. Os cardápios são balanceados e com opções para diabéticos. Para garantir a utilização de ingredientes saudáveis, gerar renda para o pequeno produtor e fortalecer a rede, as aquisições são prioritariamente oriundas da agricultura familiar.
